Hello Wembley! – Busk in London Academy launches at Wembley Park
Wembley Park is proud to announce it will be hosting the first ever Busk in London Academy day on Saturday 3 June at the globally-renowned SSE Arena, Wembley. As part of Gigs – the Mayor of London’s annual competition for the city’s best young songwriters and performers- the free Academy will offer training and professional experience to amateur performers, those who are at industry entry level as well as budding musicians who are starting to make their way in the business. The academy was launched this morning with the help of Nicola Hogg, who won the 2016 Gigs songwriting prize and the 2014’s Gigs champions, The Tailormade.
The inaugural Academy day is being launched at Wembley Park thanks to its reputation as a world-leading performance venue, giving young musicians the opportunity to hone their skills in a place steeped in musical heritage. The Academy aims to prepare musicians for the high-profile Gigs competition and will offer practical sessions including vocal and physical health for performance, stage craft, repertoire, audience engagement, equipment knowledge and advice on how to market talent. Led by experienced industry practitioners, the day ends with a Q&A with all session leaders and a special guest performer.
Speaking about the launch The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said:
“I’m incredibly proud of the amazing musical talent we have among our young people in the capital, and I want to do all I can to support the stars of tomorrow and help our city to maintain its reputation as a music powerhouse. Gigs is more than just a competition – it opens up incredible opportunities across the industry and gives budding musicians expert advice and access to a world that is typically hard to break into. It is every young musician’s dream to be centre stage in Wembley Park and I’m delighted that our very first Busk in London Academy will be hosted here.”
Speaking at the launch, James Saunders, Chief Operating Officer of Quintain, said:
“We’re thrilled that Wembley Park is hosting the first ever Busk in London Academy Day on 3 June. We look forward to welcoming fresh talent from across London to perform at a destination alive with activity and experiences and within touching distance of two of the world’s most famous performance venues.”
Adding to this, Cllr Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council, said:
“Wembley is the perfect place to host the first Busk in London Academy as it has played host to countless world class musicians over the years, many of whom, I’m sure the musicians have been inspired by. Wembley Park has undergone huge investment in recent years and the improvements are continuing to attract exciting events and visitors to the area.”
Open to up to 80 participants the Gigs Academy Day will focus on preparing potential entrants to make a successful entry to the Gigs competition which is an annual competition for young songwriters and performers aged 11-25 years old. This includes how to get the most out of the two week live performance period which will run from Saturday 22 July – Sunday 6 August 2017. During this time, performers who have been selected by the Gigs judging panel get the opportunity to perform across a network of high profile, high footfall locations in the capital over the two week period. The Grand Final is being held on 3 September at Westfield London, and prizes up for grabs include a coveted London Underground busking licence, Roland busking equipment, time in a top London recording studio and a busking trip to Paris.
One of these locations is Wembley Park with performers based on site for the duration of the two week period, adding to the already vibrant atmosphere and providing buskers the chance to perform within an area world renowned for its music links. Wembley Park has already – through the Gigs team – hosted its own busking programme last summer and hopes to carry this programme on this year.
Budding buskers can enter Gigs via the online entry form at www.London.gov.uk/gigs or www.buskinlondon.com/gigs and entries close on Friday 9 June 2017. Here they can also find the simple online application form for the Gigs Academy Day.
