Dame Sarah Storey plans to keep competing as she is faster than ever at the age of 40. The 14-time Paralympic champion, having won five titles as a swimmer and nine as a cyclist, is targeting the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Storey won four Paralympic gold medals at London 2012 and three in Rio four years later after the birth of daughter Louisa. Now she is a mother of two, after son Charlie was born last October.
I’m still getting faster,” Storey told Press Association Sport.
I went faster in Rio than I did in London in the 3km (individual pursuit), which wasn’t expected, and the winning margin to my rivals increased across all
three events I won.
I’m getting better. I don’t know if I’ve reached my peak. If I don’t improve again in Tokyo, I’ll be like ‘oh, that’s where the peak was.
It’s very personal really. Everyone else is attempting to beat me all the time; I’m sure they’re delighted I was not in Rio.’
Rio held the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships last week and Storey, who is breastfeeding Charlie, withdrew due to advice regarding the yellow fever vaccine following an outbreak in Brazil.
Storey believes she is in better shape now than when Louisa was born almost five years ago.
The way things were going I was in really good shape to go quicker than I did when Louisa was five months old, she added.
I know where I’m at, it’s just a shame I can’t produce that on the world stage.
I trained at a slightly higher intensity when I was pregnant with Charlie, which was partly due to the hours I had available, but also I had a bit more confidence. I did shorter, harder sessions. That seems to have paid off.’
Storey will hope to show her speed on the road at June’s British Championships and in the Para-cycling Road World Championships in August. Four-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny returned to global competition at the
Track Cycling World Championships in Holland earlier this month. And Lizzie Deignan recently announced she was pregnant.
Storey offered Kenny practical advice and is available should Deignan need a friendly face to call.
With Laura I told her how I came back and explained my experiences, Storey added.
Usually, it’s just explaining how you ride with a bump, how the stem comes up.
