JASON IS IN HIS THIRD YEAR STUDYING INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL BUSINESS AT UCFB
I was one of the first students at UCFB Wembley. I’d been working as a coach for a while and was looking for the next step. I was 31 then so to go to uni it had to be something I really wanted to commit to.
I remember when I was invited to look round the campus, I was standing in the corporate box in Wembley Stadium. I think there was an England match on. My guide turned to me and said, “Look around you – this is your classroom.” I thought she was joking – it blew my mind!
Connecting to the local area and the community was a big part of my manifesto when I ran to be Vice President of the Students’ Union. I looked to community leaders, community groups, charities and local businesses.
Almost no one I spoke to had any idea that there was a university at Wembley Stadium so I thought, “Right let’s do something about that.” For the students as well, I wanted to show them how many opportunities there were to engage with people. A few months ago a bunch of us did a sleep out by Wembley Park station to raise money for a local homeless charity called Streetlights. We managed to raise enough to pay for more than 130 meals. It was a really great experience – even if it was really, really cold.
