A section of Union Park South will be closed from mid March 2025 until the beginning of the end of April 2025 for essential repairs to the turf.
A large grassy area in Union Park, known as the South Lawns (find it on What3words here) is undergoing essential maintenance to enhance the lawn’s durability and sustainability. The work includes soil enhancements and new turf installation to create a greener, more resilient space. The affected area is highlighted in purple on the map below.
The works will begin in mid-March 2025 and are expected to take around 10 days, with fencing remaining for a few weeks to allow the new turf to establish. While 750 square metres of the lawn will be temporarily closed, the rest of Union Park will remain open.
This will affect everyone visiting the park, though disruption will be minimised. The improvements will create a more durable and sustainable green space, with the South Lawns expected to be ready by Easter or the end of April 2025 at the latest.

All You Need to Know About the Works
-
Why is maintenance work being carried out in Union Park?
A section of Union Park is undergoing essential maintenance to improve the quality of the grass. The park itself is not closing. The current grass surface struggles to grow in even the best conditions due to the high sand content (75:25 sand to soil ratio), making it difficult for the grass to retain moisture and nutrients. The new works aim to make the lawn more resilient and sustainable.
-
When will the work take place?
Works are scheduled to take place between mid-March and the end of April 2025. The preferred start date is 10th March. The initial work is expected to take 7-10 working days, with Heras fencing remaining in place for a further 2-4 weeks to allow the newly laid turf to establish properly.
-
Why was the work scheduled for the Spring rather than earlier in Winter?
The timing has been carefully planned to ensure optimal conditions for the new turf to establish. Starting in mid-March avoids the winter frosts that would make ground preparation difficult as frozen soil cannot be properly worked. However, the work needs to begin before the drier spring and summer months to give the new grass the best chance to establish with natural rainfall. Additionally, this timing allows over 3,000 daffodil bulbs planted in the lawn to complete their flowering cycle. While they will not flower before the works start, they should return in 2026 if the lawn remains protected.
-
Will the whole park be closed?
No. Only 750m² of the lawn on Union Park South (marked in red on the attached map) will be fenced off. The rest of Union Park will remain open, including other green spaces
-
Who will be affected by this?
Everyone who lives, works, or visits Wembley Park may experience some disruption when using Union Park. Residents of Eastern Lands, including Canada Gardens, The Robinson, Madison, Lexington, and Bowery, are likely to be most affected due to their proximity to the park.
-
What improvements are being made?
The existing surface will be stripped. 50mm of nutrient-rich topsoil will be added to enhance moisture and nutrient retention.
A new turf (Lindum LT8 Festival Plus) will be installed, which is hardwearing, more drought-tolerant, and ideal for high-footfall areas like Union Park.

Will football and ball games be allowed on the new lawn?
To help preserve the new lawn and ensure its longevity for everyone to enjoy, we kindly ask that organised sports activities such as football not be played on this area. Even with the more durable turf being installed, these high-intensity activities can still cause damage to the grass and lead to soil compaction over time. Union Park is designed as a communal green space for relaxation and casual enjoyment. For sports and organised games, we encourage residents to utilise the excellent dedicated facilities near Wembley Park and throughout the borough, specifically designed to accommodate such activities.
There are football pitches available to hire in 13 of Brent's parks, open spaces, and recreation grounds. These can be hired for single matches or for seasonal lettings.
